작업을 쌓아올리고 그것을 캔버스에 눌러 담을 때, 나는 마치 우연히 마주친 어떤 장면 속으로 옮겨진 듯한 느낌을 받는다. 그것은 캔버스 속 운명적인 한순간이다. 나는 예술을 체계적인 과정으로 접근하지 않는다. 오히려 직관적인 우연의 연속으로 본다. 하나하나의 흔적은 계획되지 않았지만, 어쩌면 불가피했던 자취가 된다.

나는 주로 유화를 사용한다. 의도를 담아 물감을 올리되, 마르기 전에 일부러 그것을 흐트러뜨린다. 물감이 아직 젖어 있을 때, 나는 수건으로 그것을 문지른다—흐리게, 들어내고, 부드럽게. 이 제스처 속에서 나는 통제를 내려놓고, 우연이 들어설 자리를 만들어준다. 어떤 때는 수건이 내가 필요하다고 여겼던 이미지를 지워버리기도 한다. 또 어떤 때는, 내가 의도적으로 그렸더라면 절대 얻지 못했을 감정적인 자취를 남긴다. 이 '문지름'은 내 손과 재료, 그리고 순간이 함께 만들어가는 일종의 협업이 된다.

나는 운명주의자다. 그래서 가장 의미 있는 작업들은 종종 내 의식적인 통제 밖에서 나온다고 믿는다. 그것들은 마치 ‘운명의 사고’처럼 찾아온다—의도하지 않았지만, 그 어떤 계산된 이미지보다 더 진실하다. 그렇게 캔버스는 감정, 기억, 질감이 충돌하는 우연의 무대가 된다. 혼란 속에서 시작된 그림은, 때로는 고요한 명확함으로 나아간다.

As I pile up my work and mash it into canvas, I feel transported to a chance encounter—a fateful moment suspended within the canvas. I approach art not as a methodical process, but as a series of intuitive accidents. Each mark becomes a trace of something unplanned, yet somehow inevitable.

I work primarily with oil paint, applying it with intention but disrupting it before it sets. While the paint is still wet, I smear it with a towel—blurring, lifting, softening. In these gestures, I relinquish control and make space for chance. Sometimes the towel removes an image I thought I needed. Other times, it leaves behind a trace more evocative than anything I could have deliberately created. The smearing becomes a collaboration between my hand, the material, and the moment.

As a fatalist, I find that the most meaningful works often emerge without my conscious control. They arrive like accidents of fate—uninvited, yet more honest than anything carefully constructed. In surrendering to the unknown, I invite moments of serendipity, allowing the materials to speak before I impose my intention.

The canvas becomes a stage for these chance events, where emotion, memory, and texture collide. What begins in chaos often reveals a quiet clarity—one I recognize only after stepping back.
