신준민(b. 1985)은 영남대학교 미술대학 및 동대학원에서 회화를 전공했다. 그는 일상에서 산책자가 되어 자연 빛과 인공 빛 등 다양한 빛의 형상에 관심을 가지며 그날의 바람, 공기, 온도, 소리 등의 비가시적 요소에 주목하여 가시화한 회화 작업을 하고 있다. White Out(2024, Pipe Gallery), White Shadow(2024, Artspace Purl), New Light(2022, 보안여관1942), 등 지금까지 총 10회의 개인전을 가졌다. 주요 수상으로는 올해의 청년작가(2015,대구문화예술회관), 수성신진작가(2017,수성아트피아), 청년예술가육성지원(2018-2019,대구문화재단), 하정웅 청년작가(2019,광주시립미술관), 청년예술가생애첫지원(2022,한국문화예술위원회)에 선정되었다.

Shin Junmin (b. 1985) studied painting at the College of Art and the Graduate School of Yeungnam University. As a flâneur in everyday life, he is attuned to various forms of light, both natural and artificial, while also focusing on invisible elements such as the wind, air, temperature, and sound of the day, bringing them to life through his paintings. To date, he has held ten solo exhibitions, including White Out (2024, Pipe Gallery), White Shadow (2024, Artspace Purl), and New Light (2022, Boan Yegwan 1942). His notable awards include Young Artist of the Year (2015, Daegu Culture and Arts Center), Suseong Emerging Artist (2017, Suseong Artpia), Young Artist Development Support (2018-2019, Daegu Foundation for Culture), Hajungwoong Young Artist (2019, Gwangju Museum of Art), and First Career Support for Young Artists (2022, Korea Arts Council).

어두운 밤, 산책로를 거닐다 어둠 속에서 반짝이는 수많은 빛과 마주하였다. 강변에 일렁이는 빛이나 가로등이나 경기장처럼 밤을 밝히는 빛, 불투명한 창에 반사된 빛의 잔상 등, 자연의 빛과 인공조명이 발하는 빛의 형상에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 하얗게 반짝이는 빛은 무언가로 가득 차 있으면서도 텅 비어 보였고, 어떠한 것보다 맑고 투명하였다. 어떤 대상을 비추는 빛은 눈부실 정도로 강렬하여 아무것도 보이지 않는 하얀 세상을 가져다주었고, 빛에 비춰진 대상은 그 순간의 감정과 상황에 따라 눈앞에 아른거리는 또 다른 잔상을 가져다주었다.

나에게 있어서 이러한 빛은 그날의 바람, 온도, 소리, 등 다양한 감각적 형태로 온몸에 받아들여진다. 이를 통해 캔버스에 물감으로 남겨진 빛의 형상은 수많은 선을 가로지르며 겹쳐지고, 흘러내리며 형체가 사라짐과 동시에 새로운 형체가 형성되는 것을 마주하게 된다. 이처럼 빛의 형상과 풍경이 가지는 내러티브는 나에게 새로운 회화적 고민을 안겨주었다. 이에 특정한 형상이 없는 빛이 공간과 조건에 따라 변화하는 빛의 형상을 포착하고 물질성과 비물질성, 구상과 추상의 경계점, 가시성과 비가시성 사이에서 교차되는 지점을 회화로써 표현하고자 한다. 이러한 빛이 누군가에게 저마다의 빛이 되길 바란다.

On a dark night, as I walked along a path, I encountered countless lights sparkling in the darkness. The shimmering lights by the river, the streetlights, and those illuminating the night like those of a sports stadium, as well as the afterimages of light reflected on an opaque window—these various forms of both natural and artificial light captured my attention. The white, sparkling light seemed both full of something and yet completely empty, clear and transparent like nothing else. The light shining on an object was so intense it created a blinding white world where nothing could be seen, and the object illuminated by this light left another afterimage, one that lingered depending on the emotions and situation of the moment.

For me, this light is experienced through various sensory forms: the wind, temperature, and sound of the day. Through this, the light captured on the canvas, in the form of paint, intersects with countless lines, overlapping and flowing as shapes dissolve and new ones form. The narrative within the forms of light and landscape presented me with new artistic reflections. In this way, I seek to capture the shape of light—without a fixed form—as it changes depending on space and conditions, and to express the intersection of materiality and immateriality, figuration and abstraction, visibility and invisibility through painting. I hope this light becomes a unique light for each person.
